Thermal and physical properties of lubricants

Joris van der List 1 September 2018 General Industry

Knowledge about thermal and physical properties of lubricants enables OEM’s to improve their equipment designs. Q8Oils has tested and measured the most important properties of some of its products. To support our partners we give them insight into this valuable information.

More and more OEMs use powerful design tools for the engineering of new equipment. In this process the lubricant is regarded as a crucial design property.

Why we measure thermal and physical properties

In a lot of cases general information about lubricants is sufficient as the thermal and physical properties of a lubricant change when the oil is ageing. However, in some cases empirical formulas and general oil properties are not enough and more accurate information about the lubricant is required to optimize equipment design.

In order to support OEMs with their calculations, Q8Research has measured thermal and physical properties of some of our products.

Examples of lubricant properties test results

Hereunder you can find a few results of thermal and physical lubricant properties.

1. The following graph shows the vapour pressure as a function of the temperature for Q8 Bach RSA 8:

2. The following graph shows the specific heat capacity (Cp) as a function of the temperature for Q8 Bach RSA 8:

3. The following graph shows the density and specific heat capacity (Cp) as a function of the temperature for Q8 Haydn 32 and Q8 Haydn 46:

Conclusion

Fundamental knowledge about thermal and physical properties of our lubricants enable OEM’s to improve their equipment designs. Within Q8Oils we have the capabilities to provide this type of product knowledge to our customers.
