Maximizing performance and minimizing environmental impact

The European Union want to reduce the use of mineral oils. The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) published a standard that specifies the term bio-lubricant and minimum requirements for all kinds of bio-lubricants and bio-based lubricants. The Q8 Bach XNRG bio-lubricants exceed the EN 16807 requirements, combining excellent cutting performances with an eco-friendly character.

The European standard EN 16807 ‘Criteria and requirements of bio-lubricants and bio-based lubricants‘ defines when a lubricant can be defined as a bio-lubricant. The standard also briefly describes relevant test method needs and presents recommendations for related standards in the field of biodegradability and product functionality.

Q8 Bach XNRG: high performance, low environmental impact

The Q8 Bach XNRG products are high performance neat cutting oils. Q8Oils Research & Development laboratory has replaced the commonly used mineral oils with synthetic esters. This resulted in metalworking fluids with advantages for the health of the operators, environment and very important the performance in different applications.

The synthetic esters used in the Q8 Bach XNRG lubricants provide many benefits:

  • Biodegradable & based on recyclable materials
  • Non-toxic and eco-friendly
  • Higher lubricity performance
  • Superior film strength
  • Excellent temperature viscosity relation (VI)
  • High flash point
  • Low volatility and reduced oil mist generation*

*: Oil mist is a known occurrence when using metalworking fluids. The oil mist can be inhaled by workers, posing a potential health risk.

Q8 Bach XNRG: even more bio than required

The Q8 Bach XNRG range consists of renewable resources. More than 65 % of the carbon content originates from renewable resources, hereby exceeding the EN 16807 requirements.

The biodegradability of these neat cutting oils is tested with the OECD 301B aerobic biodegradation test. “In the laboratory we simulate the degradation of hydrocarbons by adding bacteria”, explains Fabio Farinazzo, R&D Scientist at Q8Oils. “In the presence of oxygen these bacteria will degrade the hydrocarbons into water and carbon dioxide. The ultimate biodegradation is that there are no hydrocarbon substances left at the end of the test.” According to the OECD 301B test, Q8 Bach XNRG lubricants have a biodegradability of more than 60 %.
